Our Story

The idea of Operation Grace was first conceived in 2002 with two gifts from the Diaspora population to Haiti for its 200th Independence anniversary on January 1st, 2004. The first gift was called the “The Turnpike of Independence”, a modern road to be built from Vertières to Gonaïves. The Battle of Vertières, on November 18, 1803 was the last major battle leading to Haiti’s independence. The Independence Act was written and proclaimed on January 1, 1804 in Gonaïves. The second gift was to restore the park in Vertières, where the monument of The Heroes of the Battle of Vertières, is located. The goal is to enhance the park for children and families by constructing a museum, library, theaters and sports facilities to host tennis, basketball, volleyball, playfields and more. Unfortunately, the 2004 Haitian coup d’état put the projects on hold and soon thereafter it was terminated.
